The top 10 bosses in Final Fantasy 16

Whenever we play a game that focuses on combat and is filled with enemies capable of commanding powers beyond our understanding, we become excited at the prospect of fighting against them. Final Fantasy has always centered on grandiose boss battles, and now that the series is fully focused on action, even greater expectations are placed on its boss encounters.

To be fair, FF16 is not difficult, but some battles offer a slightly greater challenge or are still unforgettable due to the spectacle that surrounds them. Among monsters, dominants, and deities, which bosses shine the brightest during your adventure across the continent of Valisthea?

This article contains spoilers for Final Fantasy 16.

Honorable Mention: Notorious Marks

Final Fantasy 16 10 Best Bosses

Apart from all the adventure of saving the world, you have access to the hunt board, which provides you with the locations of dangerous enemies throughout the land; the infamous marks. We won't focus on them here, as there are many and they are essentially regular enemies turned up to eleven or, like Kusa Beast, simply redesigned bosses.

Nevertheless, they provide an additional challenge in the game, and hunting them rewards you with many items such as crafting materials. Besides, we already have an article dedicated to their locations. If you want to find them, you can check it out here.

10 Liquid Flame

Final Fantasy 16 10 Best

A straightforward boss, as it is nothing more than a large, combustible monster that you face during the hunt for the Mother Crystals. There is no particular storyline surrounding it; it is simply summoned to deal with you, and Shiva assists by blocking the combat area with her ice abilities.

It is still an entertaining encounter, where the creature executes giant attacks that force you to move as much as possible. Although the creature is just a summon, there are some captivating plot elements between Jill and the Fire Summoner that make this one of the most fascinating story moments in the game.

9 Benedikta And Garuda

Final Fantasy 16 10

Our first boss battle against a Dominant, Benedikta, is one of the finest encounters, particularly as you fight against her normal form, her half form, and then her fully charged form as Garuda. The fact that she temporarily removes Torgal from the battle is also a very low blow.

As it happens early in the game, it is still an introductory moment that showcases how most Dominants are treated and reveals the true essence of Clive's power. It is a captivating moment, especially when playing as Ifrit to fight against Garuda.

8 Barnabas And Odin

Final Fantasy 16

When fast-forwarding towards the end of the game, you reach Barnabas and his prepared form, Odin. It is an amusing encounter, especially as he is essentially Ultima's right-hand man. However, the low difficulty here has truly impacted the entire experience, given how much emphasis was placed on Barnabas being the ultimate fighter.

In an interlude, he completely overwhelms Clive and defeats you in your first true encounter, simply because the script dictates it. But when you finally challenge him properly, he is quite easy to defeat compared to others here. Nonetheless, his behavior during the fight and the overall spectacle make it a cool battle to witness.

7 Sleipnir

Final Fantasy

However, Ultima's right-hand man, Sleipnir's right-hand, presents a more entertaining fight. It is not particularly challenging nor does it involve much spectacle, but his teleportation and agility render him somewhat vexing.

Although he acts on behalf of Barnabas, it is his role in the plot that makes him stand out. For instance, he encourages Kupka to challenge us. Additionally, Sleipnir's overall charismatic personality makes him stand out more than his king.

In Norse mythology, Sleipnir is the name of Odin's horse, renowned for its agility.

6 Typhon

Final

Typhon is a boss who literally emerges out of nowhere. He appears following the destruction of the first mother crystals and causes significant repercussions for our main group.

He remains quite an entertaining boss encounter, with ample space to jump around during this battle, which is useful given his massive area-of-effect attacks. Ifrit makes a return here, similar to Garuda, but his controls are much smoother, indicating that Clive is slowly getting the hang of it.

5 Dragons, In General

We wanted to mention the White Dragon boss, but since all dragon enemies exhibit the same behavior, let's just talk about them all. They resemble more mini-bosses than anything else and don't have a spectacular entrance; it's just an encounter that can happen.

They deserve some praise for adding a much-needed increase in difficulty in their encounters. It's not much, but it's noticeable, and this is a place where you could die if you don't pay much attention to the battle.

4 Behemoth

Another good example of an increase in difficulty in the game is the Behemoth. There is slightly more to contend with than in most battles, as the creature summons meteors during the fight and its overall size affords it considerable reach with its attacks.

Essentially, this is also a battle where one can perish if not careful. Ultimately, it showcases a beautiful moment where Clive and Joshua fight together, although this is not the only moment of its kind.

3 Kupka And Titan (Plus Titan Lost)

Hugo Kupka is one of the most intriguing villains, even if he is not as significant as Barnabas or Ultima in comparison. It is his personal motivation alone that makes him a good villain - after all, personal interests do better in developing characters.

Not only does he provide us with an intense battle as himself, but the fight against Titan is one of the most anime-like moments ever, with a boss so gigantic that Ifrit looks like a beetle in comparison. It is a beautifully choreographed battle in every respect.

2 Bahamut

Titan may have been one of the most anime-like battles, but Bahamut surpasses it. It's you as Ifrit and your brother as Phoenix, merged together and fighting a dragon in space that is almost as powerful as Donald Duck himself. Do you need more?

While this battle focuses more on presentation than difficulty, it still remains one of the most epic moments of the entire game and is therefore a beautiful addition. Not to mention Dion, who is an impressive figure and whom it is always good to see more of.

1 Ultima And His Transformations

The best was definitely saved for last. Ultima appears only rarely in the game, but towards the end, it appears more frequently and offers several battles and transformations, each more epic than the last.

The pinnacle of these encounters is Ultimalius in his final form, where he employs the same dominant powers as you and you defeat him in stunning scenes. This battle is also the most challenging in the main game. The concluding confrontation is of outstanding excellence.
